The dollar amount of loans made to small businesses to help them purchase commercial real estate soared 40 percent in the Greater Los Angeles area in January, according to recently released data.

The SBA-504 loans, which help companies buy buildings and large equipment, totaled $71.6 million last month, compared with $50.9 million in December, according to Calif., Ariz., and Nev. lender CDC Small Business Finance. CDC says that the area took in 36 percent of all the approved statewide SBA-504 financing.
