Don't Rent Storage Space for Retail Use
Occasionally, owners with spare storage areas try to rent them to retail tenants as commercial space. You may be tempted by an offer to rent this type of space because the rental rates are typically lower. But you may actually be exchanging your staff’s, your customers’, and your safety and security for what seems like a good deal. That’s because storage spaces aren’t zoned for use by tenants as a business, and emergency responders might make the main portion of the building a priority when a fire or other disaster requires intervention, potentially not even considering that people, rather than just merchandise or equipment, are in the space. Sticking to space that clearly is meant for retail use is the best way to avoid this type of disaster.
