Is Definition of 'Adjoined' Affected by Unusable Space?

Q: I’m negotiating a lease for space in a strip mall, and I’ve asked the owner to promise in the lease that he won’t rent the space next to me to specific types of tenants, like liquor stores, that could make my business look less professional. The owner suggests that the lease say that he won’t place these tenants in space “adjoining” mine. However, a hallway would separate my particular space from the tenant to the left, while the space would be connected to the tenant on the right.
